In late 2022, we introduced a feature that allows Secret Server Cloud (SSC) customers to manage the timing of their Distributed Engine (DE) upgrades. This capability provides control over whether Engines receive automatic updates and enables targeted upgrades for specific Engine installations when testing new releases.
Upgrades have minimal impact on engine processing, with the exception of proxied sessions. During an upgrade, any secret sessions proxied through the engine will be disconnected, which may result in user-facing impact. Other engine tasks such as heartbeat, password changes, or discovery will be temporarily delayed while the engine is updated.
You can check the version of installed engines on the Distributed Engine page. In the table of engines under each site, there is an Installed Version column that displays the current version of each engine.
Over the past three years, we have observed that some Engine installations have gone extended periods without receiving new versions. While our intent is to keep upgrade timing under customer control, it is also important to ensure that Engines do not remain on versions that have aged beyond a supported window.
To that end, on January 17, 2026, all Distributed Engines that are not running version 8.4.74.0 or later will be automatically updated to the latest available version.
To ensure uninterrupted service during this enforcement window, please confirm that all Distributed Engines in your environment are upgraded to at least version 8.4.74.0 before January 17, 2026.
